This dip is MADE for football season! It's creamy, sweet, spicy, tangy and creamy, everything you want from a homemade game day dip. I love how unique this dip is at the same time perfectly suited for any game day celebration!
Add sliced onions, 3 tablespoon olive oil or butter, and salt to a saute pan over high heat for 2-3 minutes. Lower heat to medium/low and saute for 25 more minutes. *If the onions are browning too quickly, turn down the heat. We don't want burnt onions.
While waiting for the onions, mix together the sour cream, cream cheese, buffalo sauce, onion powder, salt, & chives in a large bowl and set aside. *Using a hand mixer will help cream the cream cheese better. Otherwise a silicone spatula works too.
Once the onions are caramelized and slightly cooled, add them to the mixing bowl and mix using a spoon until incorporated.*Optional- mix in a teaspoon of sugar or honey for a sweeter dip. (So delish!)
Transfer dip to a small dip bowl and serve with Fritos corn chips, tostitos, potato chips, pita bread, bell peppers, celery, or carrot sticks!
Notes
This dip can be made 3-4 days in advance! Just chill in the fridge in a sealed container and allow it to come to room temperature before serving.Variations/SubstitutionsThis dip is versatile as you can swap out a few ingredients to make it how you like it. Some of my recommended swaps are:
Swap chopped chives with scallions, thyme, or parsley
Use a spicier hot sauce if you like more heat
Add butter or less hot sauce if you want to dial down the heat
Mix in shredded cheddar or Moneterey jack cheese
Add sliced garlic to your onions for a caramelized garlic flavor
