This dip is MADE for football season! It's creamy, sweet, spicy, tangy and creamy, everything you want from a homemade game day dip. I love how unique this dip is at the same time perfectly suited for any game day celebration!
I am happy to share that I partnered with Dairy Council of Florida to bring you this deliciously creamy dip!
Other than my easy cold spiach dip, this buffalo onion dip is my new go-to cold dip to serve when the big game is on.
Imagine if buffalo wings and sour cream onion dip had a baby.
This dip would be it!
It's such a nice change up from serving those appetizers separately. I can guarantee, it will be gone by halftime!
🛒 Ingredients
- Franks Hot Sauce: This is my go-to hot sauce but use whatever you like best.
- Onions: I recommend using vidalia sweet onions since they are naturally sweeter.
- Cream Cheese: This will give the dip a thicker creamier texture.
- Sour Cream: Sour cream is a staple in onion dip. It brings a tangy bite that's so delicious.
- Onion Powder: To add a bit more onion flavor, we add some dried onion powder.
- Chives: Fresh chives tie this delicious dip together nicely.
Carmelizing Your Onions
The best, most important part of this dip is the carmelized onions. They bring a level of sweetness that makes the dip so irresistable.
To properly caramelize onions, you need to take it LOW and SLOW. It's simply something that cannot be rushed with higher heat.
They need at least 30 minutes to properly caramelize.
I like to play around with the heat until I find just the right amount where the onions will brown but NOT burn.
You know your onions are properly caramelized when the color is a deep golden brown and the onions are less than half the size. They will wilt a lot as the water and sugars are pulled out.
What To Serve Your Dip With
This dip pairs with anything and everything. I love Fritos corn chips and scoops but you can serve it with any of the following:
- pretzels
- potato chips
- tortilla chips
- bell pepper strips
- celery sticks
- carrot sticks
- chicken tenders
- broccoli
- pita bread
- cauliflower
Variations/Substitutions
This dip is versatile as you can swap out a few ingredients to make it how you like it. Some of my recommended swaps are:
- Swap chopped chives with scallions, thyme, or parsley
- Use a spicier hot sauce if you like more heat
- Add butter or less hot sauce if you want to dial down the heat
- Mix in shredded cheddar or Moneterey jack cheese
- Add sliced garlic to your onions for a caramelized garlic flavor

Game Day Buffalo Onion Dip
Equipment
- 1 saute pan
- 1 dip bowl
Ingredients
- 3 medium sweet onions, sliced thinly (about 3 cups)
- 3 tablespoon olive oil or butter
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1½ cups sour cream
- 2 oz. cream cheese, room temperature
- â…“ cup buffalo sauce
- ¾ teaspoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon chives, chopped
- ½ teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Add sliced onions, 3 tablespoon olive oil or butter, and salt to a saute pan over high heat for 2-3 minutes. Lower heat to medium/low and saute for 25 more minutes. *If the onions are browning too quickly, turn down the heat. We don't want burnt onions.
- While waiting for the onions, mix together the sour cream, cream cheese, buffalo sauce, onion powder, salt, & chives in a large bowl and set aside. *Using a hand mixer will help cream the cream cheese better. Otherwise a silicone spatula works too.
- Once the onions are caramelized and slightly cooled, add them to the mixing bowl and mix using a spoon until incorporated.*Optional- mix in a teaspoon of sugar or honey for a sweeter dip. (So delish!)
- Transfer dip to a small dip bowl and serve with Fritos corn chips, tostitos, potato chips, pita bread, bell peppers, celery, or carrot sticks!
