Easy Dessert Using Sweetened Condensed Milk
Oh. My. Gosh. You are absolutely going to freak out when you try these 3 ingredient chocolate truffles with sweetened condensed milk!!!
Much like my edible brownie batter dip, these truffles are an indulgent chocolate treat you won't be able to get enough of. This recipe is made with just 3 simple ingredients and can be made days ahead of time.
These are great for a Christmas Party, birthday party, Blind Wine Tasting or just to stash in your fridge when you get those midnight chocolate cravings! (or is that just me?!)
You can also wrap them up in a cellophane bag with ribbon for a cute gift to give to friends or neighbors!
Yes, I can pretty much guarantee that once you use sweetened condensed milk to make chocolate truffles you won't ever use another recipe. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, will go crazy for one of these treats next time you make them!
What Is Sweetened Condensed Milk?
Condensed milk is simply thickened and sweetened milk from a cow. It is thicker because the water is removed hence the name "condensed".
What Are Chocolate Truffles?
Chocolate truffles are usually made with the best quality chocolate, rich cream and sugar.
These truffles are less expensive and much easier using sweetened condensed milk. They're basically a ganache that is heated to combine the ingredients, then cooled in the fridge, formed into balls, then roll in a topping of choice.
The name comes from their resemblance to the fungi commonly known as a truffle! However, this treat is nothing like a mushroom, these are rich, decadent, sweet and soooo indulgent!

You Only Need 3 Ingredients!
*full ingredients list and measurements can be found in recipe card below*
- Sweetened condensed milk: You will want to use the regular sweetened condensed milk for the recipe instead of the low fat or the fat free. It gives it a richer flavor and much better texture
- Cocoa powder: I like using unsweetened cocoa powder in these truffles, but you could also use Dutch processed if you want a darker color
- Butter: Please use salted butter for this recipe! The small amount of salt is needed to help balance out the sweetness

Step 4: Scoop out your truffles
Use a mini ice cream scoop to roll 1 ounce of the chilled mixture into a ball. Roll until smooth using the palms of your hands.
Step 5: Coat your truffles
Roll your truffle in cocoa powder or chocolate sprinkles, then place onto a plate and repeat with the remaining chocolate.
👨🍳Expert Tips
- If the chocolate looks grainy when you're heating it, that means it has seized and you'll need to start over.
- Grease your plate before pouring the chocolate onto it so it doesn't stick
- If the mixture is too sticky, you may want to slightly dampen your hands to help with rolling it into balls.
- Roll the chocolate truffles into your preferred topping immediately after rolling into a ball because they'll still be sticky.
- If you've pre-rolled the truffles and they're no longer sticky enough for toppings, press them gently with your hands because the heat will make them sticky again.
🍫Topping Ideas
Personally, I like mine rolled in cocoa powder, but here's a few more options!
- Dutch processed cocoa powder (for a richer color)
- Sprinkles- both rainbow or chocolate
- Matcha powder (A great idea for St. Patrick's Day!)
- Chopped nuts- pecans, walnuts, or peanuts are all yummy. I suggest toasting them first!
- Powdered freeze dried raspberries
- White chocolate shavings
- Finely shredded coconut
How To Store Chocolate Truffles
You will want to store chocolate truffles with sweetened condensed milk in an airtight container. You can keep them at room temperature for a couple of days or place the container into the fridge and they'll last for up to 1 month.
Can I Freeze Chocolate Truffles?
Yes, you can keep them in a freezer safe container in the freezer for up to 3 months. But for the best texture and flavor be sure to thaw to room temperature before eating.
Frequently Asked Questions
You can if you want them to last longer, but I don't think they'll last for more than a day once you try a bite! If you do refrigerate them, just be sure to bring to room temp before eating.
Unfortunately, milk is not an equal substitute.
There's about 76 calories in each truffle, but all of the nutrition information can be found in the recipe card down below.
I recommend sticking with the cocoa powder because these are supposed to have a rich, indulgent chocolate flavor. The hot cocoa mix will make them too sweet, in my opinion.

Instructions
- Add the sweetened condensed milk, cocoa powder, and salted butter to a saucepan over medium heat. Stir well to combine all ingredients
- When the mixture begins to bubble, turn the heat down to low and keep a gentle simmer
- Continue stirring the mixture with a rubber spatula scraping the bottom and sides until it begins to get darker in color and thicken up. You may need to adjust the temperature to prevent the chocolate from burning, you want to slowly caramelize the sugars.
- Stir the chocolate mixture occasionally for another 10-14 minutes, making sure the bottom does not burn. It should be quite thick at this point. (If it looks grainy that means the chocolate has seized and you need to start again.)
- Turn the heat off and pour the chocolate onto a lightly greased plate or shallow bowl, then cover tightly with plastic wrap and chill in the fridge for 1 hour.
- After an hour, remove the plastic wrap and use a mini ice cream scoop to scoop 1 ounce of the chocolate truffle mixture into your hands.
- Roll the mixture between the palms of your hands into a smooth ball (you may need to wet your hands slightly) then roll in cocoa powder or chocolate sprinkles.
- Repeat with the remaining truffle mixture, rolling half in cocoa powder and the other half in chocolate sprinkles
