Skewered your watermelon makes them super fun to eat!

Watermelon screams summer time doesn't it? It is just so refreshing and perfectly sweet!

And since we have a heat wave coming here on the East coast I will be eating lots of watermelon and fruit like these Fruit Sticks w/ Coconut Yogurt Dip.

    You can skewer multiples.

These watermelon skewers are so easy to prepare and really hard to mess up! Because you really can't have TOO much rum can you?

You can serve these out of a big ole plastic Ziploc bag or make them extra fancy and fun by skewering them! I doubt you will care after having a few anyway!  😉

Cut your watermelon into bite sized cubes like I did OR you can use a melon baller to make bite sized watermelon balls! Either way, they will be delicious!

    Watermelon Picking Tips

    cubed watermelon in a bowl

My father claims he is the BEST watermelon picker in the world. I can't deny it because he did always come home with a deliciously red and JUICY watermelon. He claims you have to "listen". Listen?! Yes, supposedly knocking on the watermelon like someone's inside will help us determine its ripeness.

Don't "knock" it till you try it! (LOL, see what I did there?)

All you need to do is listen for a deep thud. Can you imagine seeing an older Greek man knocking and listening to a bunch of watermelons in the grocery store? Would YOU think he was a lunatic?

I probably would! But supposedly, this is not crazy behavior!

This is apparently a thing. Have you heard of this before?

I've also read that you also are supposed to look for a heavy one that has a large yellow spot on the bottom of the watermelon. This is where it was resting in the field. I don't know why this matters but try these tests out and let me know if you were successful in bringing home a red, juicy one!

My Tips For Picking A Good Watermelon:

    1. Listen for a deep thump
    2. Get a heavy one
    3. Look for a yellow spot

    Good luck! 🙂

    Marinating

watermelon cubes marinating in rum a plastic bag in a bowl
    Marinate everything in a bag!

You can infuse your watermelon as long as your heart desires! The longer you "marinate" it, the more "boozy" it will become!

I left my watermelon cubes overnight but a few hours will work too!

Just cut your watermelon into smaller bite sized pieces and place them in either a large Ziploc bag or a shallow bowl so that they are fully covered in the liquid.

Note* You can use however much rum you desire! You can also omit the sugar. The sugar adds some sweetness but is not necessary!

    Ingredients

    • 1 Whole Seedless Watermelon ((15-20 lbs.))
    • 1 Cup Watermelon Juice ((from one half))
    • 1 Cup White Rum ((more or less as desired))
    • ½ Cup Sugar
    • ½ Cup Lime Juice ((about 2 large limes))
    • 1 tablespoon Lime Zest
    • 10 Mint Leaves, chopped

    Instructions

    • Chop half of your watermelon into bite sized cubes or balls (using a melon baller).
    • Juice the other half of your watermelon. You can do this two ways, puree it in a food processor OR just smash it up with your hands. The juice is what you want!
    • Add watermelon juice, rum, sugar, mint, lime juice and zest to bag or bowl. Let soak in the fridge for at least 2 hours or overnight.
    • Serve on skewers or straight out of the bag! 😉

    Recipe Notes

You can cube or ball your watermelon. If you ball it, use a sharp melon baller.
    Tip*
Freeze any excess watermelon scraps to add to smoothies or watermelon daquiris!

I will try a version without alcohol for the kids. I think they will love it. Anything on skewers is so festive, isn't it? Thank you for sharing.

I wish I had seen this recipe last week when my son Liam invited 40 friends to celebrate the high school graduation. Growing up vacationing in the South of Italy we grow up with watermelon. I knew the knocking tip, but not the yellow spot. Will look up next time
