Pokémon is an awesome birthday party theme to tackle! I mean you have the entire Pokédex of Pokémon characters, Poké balls, trading cards, Pikachu, Ash and a bunch of young trainers (the kids) ready to battle!
Let's get creative and put our Pokemon trainer hats on to throw the best Pokémon themed birthday party your child will remember for years!
Here at AGT, I share lots of party ideas so when a neighbor asked me if I would help out with her son's 8th birthday party...of course I said YES!
I love themed parties! (Have you seen my Donut Birthday Party post yet?!)
Party planning opens the floodgates to allow those creative juices to flow at full force! 🙌🏻
Plus, my two boys are currently OBSESSED with Pokémon so I knew it would be a fun one to tackle!
Below I share ideas for simple Pokémon decorations, inexpensive activities, and tasty food ideas for you to consider adding to your child's Pokémon themed party!

Pokemon Party Cake
I suggest ordering a cake or cupcakes at least a week prior. This double layer cake is Pokemon themed, not too difficult for a bakery to make and perfect for any kids party! Add some Pokemon themed candles and you're set.
These cupcakes are simply Pikachu colors with Pikachu cupcake toppers! So cute and matches the theme perfectly!
Pokemon Party Food Ideas
There are many different directions to go in here. Start with the Pokedex of Pokemon characters and create a fun food spinoff like we did here! I added can
Food Label Examples:
- Charizard Fireballs
- Charmander Chips
- Jigglypuff Puffs
- Pidgeot Popcorn
Here is a template of the food cards I used. The link will open in a Canva account which is a fun editing tool. They have pokemon letters you can add yourself if you go to the "elements" tab and search "Pokemon". Play around with different sizing!
The Food Table
The hostess of the party was expecting about 25 kids plus parents . Plus, she likes to go over-the-top with food, like me, so here is what was on the menu.
First we set up 3 folding tables with thick disposable yellow tablecloths. Then decided where the food and drinks were going to go.
We set up a crock pot filled with homemade mac n' cheese. You can purchase storebought party packs to make it quicker if you want.
We also set up a hot dog steamer (on the right there) which both cooks and keeps the dogs warm in no time. (One of my favorite products!!)
She decided to order most of the food which is a great idea to keep party stress low. This set-up uses disposable chafing dishes to keep the food warm.
I was also asked to make my chicken Caesar salad for the party which I highly recommend making for parties. It's so easy and my most requested dish by far for parties! You can watch how I make it on IG HERE!
Pikachu Peeps
I made these Pikachu Peeps using these Peeps Bunnies!
It took me just 10 minutes to turn them into Pikachi!
Just melt some chocolate (I like these melting wafers) and dip the ears into it. Then finish by using some red writing gel (pictured) for Pikachu's cheeks!
You can serve them just like this but I decided to stick them onto wooden skewers and then right into a styrofoam ball.
This was a last minute treat but if I had more time, I would have placed green grass over the ball.
Pokémon Drinks
Pokemon has energy types you can give them during battles. So I printed two energy symbols and added them to two drink dispensers for the kiddos to help themselves their own energy!
Yellow: Lightning energy is made using a mixture of pineapple juice and orange juice.
Blue: Water energy (since it was a pool party) which is Hawaiian Blue Punch.

Pokémon Activities
Activities at a birthday party are crucial. So consider setting up a Pokeball Punch!
Take any large box or cardboard and, using a hot glue gun, glue down solo cups or any larger cup to the board in a shape like a Pokeball.
This cardboard box was a bit more narrow so it turned out more oval than round but the kiddos won't care at all! They just want whats INSIDE!!
Once the glue dries, stuff some Pokemon prizes inside the cups.
Then take red, white and black tissue paper and using a rubberband, wrap it around the top of the cup.
The kids then get to choose a cup to PUNCH to see what's inside! They had SO much fun doing this!
Pokémon Printouts
If your party is for kids under the age of 10, I strongly suggest FIRST setting up folding tables with some festive Pokemon tablecloths. (Do this 2 days in advance.)
Then scatter some Pokemon themed activities for the kids to work on during the party when they're eating or just need a break for the crowd.
More Party Activities
- Design your own Pokeball- This is a fun EASY activity for any age!
- Pokemon Crossword Puzzle- For the older kiddos!
- Create your own deck box- This is for kids 4+ (scissors needed) and SO fun!
- Door Hangers- Make a Pickachu or Jiggly Puff door hanger.
- Draw Your Own Pokemom Card- Coloring any age!
This website also has super fun activity ideas including BINGO and "This or That" Pokemon style!
Make sure to set out an art caddy to include all the markers, scissors, glue sticks, crayons and pencils! I would add one per table for all the kiddos to get involved! Make sure to have a trash bin close by!
Pokémon Pinata
I think every kid's party needs a pinata (especially when boys are involved)! Pikachu is the main Pokemon that everyone loves so a Pikachu pinata is a must! Stuff it with Pokemon prizes, snacks or candy.
Extras
It's always nice to have a table near the entrance for guests to place their gifts!
Party Cups
These plastic cups are great for smaller kids under 10. I threw their names on it before the party so they could keep track of whose is whose. If I had more time, I would have added pokemon stickers or added Pikachu straws!
They used these to "re-energize" at the energy juice station I showed earlier!
Party Favors
These Pokeball bags are a great favor because they stand up on their own and match the theme perfectly!
Final Pokémon Party Tips
As with ANY birthday party, make sure to plan weeks in advance. You don't want to be running to the store the day before the party. Order as much as you can online way in advance to ensure it arrives days before the party.
Decide on what food to serve and consider ordering at least half. (We can't do it all ourselves.) Also place the cake/food orders in advance too. The decorations can be done any time before the party, just not the day of. Plan ahead!!
Don't forget to play the Pokemon theme song! 🎶 Gotta Catch Them All! 🎶
