This Marshmallow Spiderweb Cocktail takes our Spooky Black Cocktail and gives it an easy Halloween upgrade: a stretchy, edible marshmallow web across the glass.
The cocktail underneath is our fruity Black Cosmo-style martini, made with vodka, orange liqueur, Chambord, cranberry-pomegranate juice and fresh lemon. The white marshmallow strands look especially dramatic against the nearly black drink, but the same trick also works beautifully on an espresso martini.

Why this works so well for Halloween
This is one of those party tricks that looks much harder than it is. You get a dramatic Halloween cocktail without special decorating tools, and the web is edible. The dark cocktail underneath also gives you plenty of Halloween color without changing the flavor just for the sake of the presentation.
How to make the marshmallow spiderweb
Make the cocktail first. Shake the Black Cosmo ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled martini or coupe glass.
Soften the marshmallows. Put a few mini marshmallows in a microwave-safe bowl and heat in short bursts, just until they become soft and stretchy. Let them cool briefly before touching them because melted sugar can be surprisingly hot.
Stretch the web. Lightly dampen your fingertips, grab a very small amount of softened marshmallow and pull it apart until it forms thin strands. Stretch the strands across the rim of the glass in several directions. Irregular strands look more realistic than a perfectly symmetrical web.
Add a spider if you want. A candy spider is edible; a plastic spider should stay clearly outside the drink.
The trick to a better marshmallow web
Use less marshmallow than you think you need. A tiny amount stretches surprisingly far. Thick ropes look like marshmallow; very thin, uneven strands look like spiderwebs. If the marshmallow starts sticking heavily to your fingers, dampen them again.
You can also do this with an espresso martini
Absolutely. The white marshmallow web looks fantastic against a dark espresso martini, and the technique is exactly the same.
For a quick version, shake 2 ounces vodka, 1 ounce cooled espresso, ¾ ounce coffee liqueur and ¼ ounce simple syrup with ice until very cold and frothy. Strain into a coupe or martini glass, then add the softened marshmallow web across the rim.
If you already have a favorite espresso martini recipe, use that instead. The important part here is the contrast between the dark drink and the white web.
Can I make these ahead?
You can mix the Black Cosmo ingredients ahead and refrigerate the mixture until party time. Shake individual servings with ice before pouring so they are properly chilled.
Add the marshmallow web shortly before serving. It looks best when freshly stretched onto the glass and can soften as condensation builds.
