This drink is a fun mix of strawberry daiquiri and pina colada, swirled together in a tall hurricane glass. It may look fun and impressive, but it really couldn't be easier to make.
Simply blend each layer, pour, and enjoy! This frozen drink is perfect to sip at while relaxing with the girls around the pool, or enjoy one as a treat after a long week.
You can also make this frozen rose cocktail if you're looking for another sweet, slushy drink or this Hurricane cocktail for something summery but strong!
Ingredient Notes
*full ingredients list and measurements can be found in the recipe card below*
- Light rum: Light rum isn't aged very long and filtered many times to remove any impurities. It has a much lighter flavor than an amber colored rum, so I prefer to use it in this fruity drink
- Lime juice: Lime juice is used in the strawberry daiquiri layer. I recommend fresh over concentrated for the best flavor.
- Frozen fruit: You'll need both frozen strawberries and frozen pineapple
- Simple syrup: A plain simple syrup is used in the strawberry portion, but for more strawberry flavor feel free to try this homemade strawberry syrup!
- Pineapple juice: You can use fresh or canned pineapple juice, it won't change the pina colada flavor too much.
- Cream of coconut: This is an essential ingredient in making the perfect pina colada layer! Cream of coconut is a type of coconut syrup that's made for drinks, it is NOT the same as canned coconut cream

How To Make A Miami Vice Without Alcohol
I love my mocktails so if you'd like to make a virgin Miami vice, all you have to do is leave out the rum. You can blend it up as is and then both kids and adults can enjoy it!
Aleka's Drink Tips
- Dark rum has more depth of flavor, so I recommend using light rum (AKA silver rum) for maximum fruity flavor.
- Make this drink with frozen fruit in order to get that thick, slushie texture. Fresh fruit will just make the drink thin and the layers won't be as prominent.
- Serve immediately, since this is a frozen cocktail, it's best served fresh.
- You can easily double or triple the recipe if making this for a party.
Frequently Asked Questions
You want to use light rum! It has a much lighter flavor and color than dark rum and really allows the fruity flavors of the drink to shine.
Cream of coconut is a sweetened coconut syrup that's made with both coconut milk and sugar. It's a common ingredient in tropical drinks like a pina colada and a blue Hawaiian cocktail.
They're both very similar to one another, however a lava flow substitutes the lime juice with banana. So instead of strawberry, it's more like a banana daiquiri and a pina colada mixed.
Miami Vice Variations
- Make it a mocktail: Just remove the rum from each layer, and blend as directed!
- Use a different berry: Try substituting the strawberries with raspberries or blackberries or use my blackberry syrup.
- Switch the rum: Not a fan of rum? Try making your Miami Vice cocktail with tequila.
- Banana twist: Add OR swap banana liqueur or fresh bananas for or to the pina colada mix for a delicious twist!
