🛒 Ingredients
- Bourbon: You really want to use a good quality bourbon here. See below for my recommendations.
- Angostura bitters: This is a popular ingredient used in many cocktails. It's spicy, bitter, with spicy notes of cloves and cinnamon. You can usually find these at your local grocery store or on Amazon.
- Brown sugar simple syrup: I prefer to use a homemade brown sugar syrup in mine however, you could also buy it online! See my recipe below.
- Pumpkin puree: When purchasing this, make sure it is pumpkin puree and NOT canned pumpkin pie filling. It adds a yummy rich fall flavor.
- Pumpkin pie spice: This is made of cinnamon, clove, all spice, ginger and nutmeg. You can make your own or purchase it in any food store.
- Egg white: This adds a frothy foam to the top as well as a rich texture.
🍂Instructions
- Add your egg white (if using), with ice to a shaker and shake well for 15 seconds.
- Add the bourbon, bitters, brown sugar simple syrup, pumpkin puree, egg white and pumpkin pie spice and shake again for 10 seconds.

- Garnish with a cinnamon stick, pumpkin peel or wedge and enjoy!

📝Expert Tips and Tricks
- Use a good quality bourbon.
- Don’t skip the cocktail shaker. While it is unusual, it is necessary to incorporate the pumpkin puree so it is well blended.
- The larger the ice cube the longer it takes to melt, thus ensuring your drink won’t get watered down. Here’s a great tray to use!
- Make it fancy with a cinnamon stick garnish for the ultimate fall touch.

Recipe Variations
- Substitute the bourbon with whiskey (or peanut butter whiskey) for a spicier cocktail.
- Use a pumpkin spice simple syrup for more pumpkin flavor.
- Sweeten with maple syrup instead of brown sugar.
- You can use plain ground cinnamon if you don’t have pumpkin pie spice.
- Add a dollop of pumpkin or bourbon whipped cream for a richer, creamier cocktail.
How To Choose The Best Bourbon
When choosing bourbon, it can definitely be overwhelming if you don’t know where to start. I’m going to share a few tips on picking a good one, as well as my favorite brands.
Bourbon Tips:
- Look for one that’s been aged at least 4 years.
- Single barrel- this means that the bottle comes from a “single barrel.” Because of that, the flavor will vary from bottle to bottle, but it’s usually more robust.
- Wheated bourbon- the bourbon will have a softer, more rounded out flavor as opposed to rye bourbon which is spicier.
- Small batch- by buying small batch bourbon, you’re purchasing a more premium bottle because of the extra care and work that goes into crafting it. This is a great choice for any bourbon based cocktail.
Favorite Bourbon Brands:
😋 My Layered Taco Dip and my Cold Spinach Dip are both popular party dips people go crazy over!
- Henry McKenna
- Maker’s Mark
- Michter’s US1 Bourbon
- Four Roses Single Barrel
- Woodford Reserve
Why Use Egg White?
If you've never had a cocktail shaken with egg white, you HAVE to try it. It's very popular in pisco sours.
Believe it or not, it's NOT about the taste because it does not taste like anything. Instead, it's about the rich and creamy texture it gives a drink not to mention, the luxurious foamy top!
If you do not want to use it, you can leave it out!
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, this pumpkin cocktail is similar to an old fashioned! Though, it differs in that an old fashioned typically contains bourbon, a plain simple syrup or sugar cube, and hints of orange and cherry. No egg white or pumpkin is used.
This bourbon cocktail definitely is on the stronger side, since bourbon is the main ingredient. However, the overall drink is very well balanced, and isn’t overwhelmingly strong especially since we shake it with ice which helps to dilute the drink.
